BACKGROUND
INSURANCE Claim Management is a core issue for the protection of Insurance policy holders and hence a priority concern today. From the Insurance company's viewpoint, claim management is a key element in the competition between Insurance providers and for the improvement of industry’s public image. Health Insurance products are sold in India since early 1990s, the Health portfolio did not see much growth till 2002. After opening of the insurance sector and introduction of TPAs, the Health Insurance sector is seeing substantial growth.
During the financial year 2006-07 the health premium which was Rs 3197 has increased to Rs 4969 crs with a growth rate of 55%. Health Insurance premium is likely to be Rs 13000 crs by 2012 and expected to reach Rs 25000 crs by 2020.
Though the premium is increasing in volume the claims are also mounting and the average claims ratio is about 100%. In fact the claim ratio from the corporates is much higher at 125% forcing the Insurance companies to reduce their dependency on corporates on one hand and devising the cover with restriction. With the increase in premium volume and claims, the services offered by TPAs have gone down considerably. Various stake holders of health policy are unhappy in the end. When the TPAs concept was introduced it was expected that the TPAs will have great contracts with the hospitals and both the insurer and the insured will get the benefit. Unfortunately this has not happened, and on the other hand the dissatisfaction is going up year by year. The scenario is such that Insurance companies, Hospitals and TPAs blame each other and in the end the customer is made to suffer.
Various governments are realizing that they are not in a position to provide the required health care facility and are trying to opt for insurance covers to general public. New developments / policies are likely to increase the gaps in Service Level Agreements among various stake holders. Booming Health Insurance can be a golden opportunity if handled properly other wise this will lead to lot of complaints.
